Hi everyone, Momo-chan here! I’d like to share here a drawing technique that we are going to use throughout my tutorials. I am going to share a lot more drawing ideas, so be sure to visit! 🙂
While there are many ways to draw or replicate an image, we recommend this method for kids and beginners.
What do we need?
- Pencil
- Grid lined paper
I would recommend using a pencil or much better a mechanical pencil. We want to get thin and accurate lines. Draw the grid lines lightly so they can be easily erased later.
On that note we also have prepared grid lined paper for you to use. You may download a copy here. Please keep in mind that these free downloads are intended for personal use only. 💖
You may print it on an A4 sized paper or if you want to draw on a smaller scale, you may print 2 copies on one A4 sized paper.
Let’s start drawing!
We create a grid on both the reference image (for this part our tutorials already have grids on them) and your drawing paper.
When using the grid method we focus on one grid square at a time, carefully copying the lines and curves within the same square on the reference image. I like to use a lot of curvy lines on my drawings, which help create the cuteness factor. I will show you how to draw on one grid square below. I usually draw from left to right as I am right handed. If you are one of the gifted lefties feel free to start from the right! I know you would. 🙂
If you are satisfied with how your first grid looks, you can go on and draw the rest of the grids one at a time. My favorite grid to use in my tutorials is 4×4 grid, that means we have to draw on all 16 grid squares. Sounds a lot huh? Not to worry, I’d say, for me that is very manageable. We don’t want to use too little grids. Few grids would mean we have too many details placed on one grid. And we wouldn’t want that, promise, what we want is to capture the tiny details that would help us recreate the characters. Having too many grids also is not ideal, you might end up just having to draw a tiny line or a short curve on one grid. And that’s basically it.
Of course, just like any drawing techniques, we always have to practice. Practice makes perfect and we always want to strive for excellence. Or maybe just have fun too.
